Recipe for Disaster

Ok, well, not for disaster per se, but nothing else seemed to make a catchy title.

Every year my job has a Thanksgiving dinner on the day before Thanksgiving for all the employees. This year, there is a contest for the best side dish and best dessert. I made Pumpkin Cheesecake for a party earlier this week, but decided it would not be very cost effective to make again. I decided to make my stand-by: brownies. And to be festive I found a Pumpkin Brownie recipe online. At least it said it was brownies. But what it turned out to be was more like, Pumpkin Cake or Pumpkin Bread. Which is not all that unique or different. Certainly not prize winning (although I did seem to get the perfect amount of spices in there!) So now, here I sit, with yet another disappointment (hey, it may seem small, but it’s just the straw that tips the scale, so to speak).

Good thing I still have half a cheesecake…. if only everything in life had a back up cheesecake….

This does not look like brownies!!!!!

Too Many Holidays!!!

Every year my birthday falls halfway between Christmas and New Year’s.  Those of you with Christmas birthdays know how sucky this is.  This year, Hanukkah happens to end at sundown on my birthday.  Does this mean I can blow out my hanukiah candles and make a wish???  Is it more likely to come true (cuz I could use all the help I can get!)

P.S. I know you’re supposed to let the candles burn out, this was just a funny musing I had in my head when I realized the dates of events this season!

Rosetta Stone what?

Allora, alors, ثم , so…. for those of you who don’t know me, I like learning languages (have we not already established my high level of nerd?).  And if you saw my post a couple weeks ago (this one) I planned to study the main three I know (French, Italian, and Arabic) on a regular schedule.  Well we all knew that wouldn’t actually happen.  I am, however, refreshing all of my French as I may or may not have claimed to be fluent in it for the sake of getting a job (after twelve years of studying it I should be able to say I am fluent!!!)  Plus, I am teaching one of my friends across the country French, which helps me remember everything too.  (And I have found I enjoy making lessons for it… maybe I would make a good teacher…)

In any case, I long ago discovered that I will never be entirely proficient at anything as once I have learned what I feel is “enough” of something, I get bored.  So instead, I have decided to learn a little bit of EVERY language.  Well, every major language anyways.  Starting with the six languages of the UN (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, and Mandarin).  If I can learn the five most essential phrases in every language (Hello, Goodbye, Please, Thank You, Excuse Me) I  will consider myself successful.

Mind you this is all a hobby.  You’d think there would be a bigger job market for people with such linguistic skills, but not so much.  At least not that I’ve been able to find.  And no I can’t join the military.  Already checked, too many medical conditions.  (Which, by the way, my “eating healthy” plan did not help but in fact, made worse!)

Anyways, we shall see how it goes.  The problem with self study is I tend to get distracted and then forget everything I have learned.  So if anyone wants to help me with any languages, I will gladly accept (I recently lost my Arabic teacher, so that would be especially helpful)!  I could stand to learn a few curse words too 😉

I do have a method in mind for actually completing this plan, and when I finish I will post the final result!  (Note: I did not say how long this might take…)

All I Do is Win, Win, Win

First off I’d like to say, two posts in one day?!?!?!  Kristin is rubbing off on me.

Secondly, I’d like to thank all of you for being too lazy to ever enter all these contests so I can win them all.

Third I’d like to thank Clear Channel Radio for making it so easy to enter their contests online.

And all of you who are so jealous, let me point out that I share all the contest links with you constantly, it’s not my fault you don’t take the two minutes to enter.  Next time you think “Man she is so lucky, she wins so much cool stuff” just remember you could win cool stuff too.  Also, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be, once I win something I have to find people to go with me, sometimes beg even, then I have to try and get off work because they always announce the winners last minute, and thirdly- my tax liability is going to be through the roof this year!  So remind be of all these awesome things I won when I bitch about paying my taxes.

Also, I made a lot of lists in this post, sorry.

If I Were Governor

So let me start by saying that I’m so glad that the ban on panhandling in Tampa is working so well! (By which I mean I passed four panhandlers on my way home today).

For those of you who are not from West Central Florida, or just don’t follow the news, as of November 1st, the city of Tampa banned panhandling except on Sundays (which today is not).  Of course, banning something but not enforcing it doesn’t do much good.  Plus, if I were a bum, I would panhandle to get arrested just for 3 hots and a cot!  So now our jails can be filled with bums while real criminals roam the streets raping and pillaging (because clearly all criminals are pirates…or vikings).  All of this is putting to further waste our tax dollars.

You know what would not have been a waste of our tax dollars?  High speed light rail system.  But, oh wait, that got shot down (again, for those of you not from the area or just oblivious- central Florida tried last year to pass a bill for an above ground subway of sorts, but it got shot down despite popular vote).  What would be a great way to create jobs, get bums off the street, and keep costs relatively low?  Hire all the bums to build the railroad!  Obviously they would need professional supervision, but labor costs would decrease significantly in paying people making nothing now, minimum wage to help build it.  How do you think they built the cross country railroads.  They paid all the Micks pennies to do it!  (And beer, which is close enough to money for an Irishman and probably a bum)*.

I’m just saying, we need more businessmen and less politicians running this place.  And by businessmen, I don’t mean the kind that embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars.

*I mean no real racism by this, I am part Irish, it’s merely the way of thinking back when the railroads were built.  They also hated Asians, but as I am not part Asian, I feel I am not allowed to make racist jokes about them.

Plan for Bettering Myself

In my efforts to make myself better, and feel better (physically and emotionally) I have developed a weekly regimen for bettering myself.  Ideally, I would love to be like ladies of some means in Victorian times where all I would have to do is study arts and languages all day long.  Unfortunately, I have to actually work for a living.  However, I have included language studying as much as possible as it is the only useful skill I have developed to hopefully obtain a career.  I have also included dancing, as it is my preferred means of physical exercise.  Perhaps eventually I will be able to squeeze in piano or guitar, as I have tried on numerous occasions to learn both.  The dietary idea came form some research I did as to why I always feel congested.  I knew dairy was a huge culprit in causing congestion, but I had no idea that so was Gluten and Refined Sugar.  I do not find myself string enough to give up any of these entirely, especially not working in the restaurant that I do, so, I have decided to give up one at a time, one day a week.  Hopefully minimizing them in my system will help me feel better, especially coupled with eating healthier in general.

And without further ado, here is my plan:

*Items in italics are not definitive and depend on work schedule/funds

You will notice that weekends are pretty lax.  This is mainly because this is when I am busiest and lack time to really eat, let a lone study anything.  And when I do have a weekend day off, I am usually spending it at a theme park or other event where I do not wish to limit my gastronomic choices.  I have also tried to include some socialization time so as not to further my depression.  Dancing involves socialization, as do theme park days (usually).  And I have scheduled a TV show night with my little brother to help with family bonding.

All of this will probably be constantly changed and edited, but I hope to keep you updated as to how well it works and perhaps you can try making one for yourself 🙂
